Tulum Airport Information

The Tulum International Airport was founded in December of 2023 • The IATA Code is TQO • It was builded and is operated by Mexican military • The airport features a 3,700 metres (12,100 ft) runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft and handling 5.5 million passengers annually • Airport is located 40 kilometers away from Tulum city • The official website of Tulum Airport is www.aitulum.com

The airport has only one terminal for passengers. The place was build as one piece building so you can move through the terminal walking. There are no electric bands to advance nor vehicles to transfer inside.

Logistically and economically, flying to Cancun makes the most sense if your stay will be in Cancun, Isla or Costa Mujeres, Playa del Carmen and even the Riviera Maya because it is close to these places and has many airline options. But if you plan to stay in Tulum, Bacalar or Mahahual, the most recommended airport for you will be the airport of Tulum

In many ways they are similar in quality and color since they are on the same coast. However, they offer a different feeling. Tulum is more rustically beautiful. It gives a more natural feeling. It is home to Mayan ruins, epic cenotes, some of the best nightclubs and top DJ events along with stunning beaches. On the other hand, the beaches of Cancun are more perfect. Designed to be more pristine and clear. The party is also incredible and has more things to do and better services as it is a larger city.

Yes, there is a local environmental tax that is collected by accommodations. Also, if you do not have a Mexican passport, there are two taxes you must pay, the VisiTax and the DNR if your stay is longer than 6 days. For more information, check our MEXICAN TAXES article and VisiTAX link, you can find it in the footer of this website.

There are many options to get from Tulum Airport to Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cancun and anywhere in the Riviera Maya. Booking with Traveliere is the safest option to travel comfortably and on time to your destination when you land at Tulum Airport with prices from $42US. As you leave the terminal you will see vendors from various transport companies, taxis and passenger buses with prices higher than $170US (Basic sedan price from Canada Transfers in this year) for a transfer to go from the Airport to Tulum Hotel Zone.

Before accepting a transfer at Tulum Airport, it is important to check the fare, agree on the payment method, and if you pay by card, check carefully and at all times before confirming the charge. If you decide to travel by bus, the ticket price may seem cheap, but consider that the Tulum bus terminal is 30-40 minutes from the airport and 15-20 minutes from the Hotel Zone, so adding the taxi you will have to take from there, the amount you can save is minimal compared to the fatigue, wear and tear and risk of taking this route.

You can arrange to rent a car arriving to airport. At your landing near to luggage bands are some sellers offering cars for rent from a few companies. When renting a car we suggest to get your Tourist Mobility Pass, you can download the app from: https://guestassist.mx/servicios/pase-movilidad
