What travelers need to know about the government tax VisiTax Mexico

If you’ve never traveled to our stunning destinations of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum, you may not know exactly what VisiTax Mexico is or why it’s essential. This tax was implemented in 2021 by the government for the improvement and maintenance of the state’s beaches and infrastructure.

Note that Quintana Roo is not the only state that requires a tax like the VisiTax gob mx. More than 60 destinations around the world already require a tourist tax like the Visitax in their tourist destinations such as Paris, Venice, Rome, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Ibiza, the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Switzerland, Spain, Iceland and the Maldives, are some of the countries and cities that already have a Visitax type option. The first one was France in 1910.

In Quintana Roo this tax is 100% mandatory for all travelers without mexican passport who visit any city located in the state, these includes travel by any of this airports:

Cancun Airport • Tulum Airport • Cozumel Airport • Isla Mujeres Airport • Playa del Carmen Airport • Holbox Airport

Once you paid your VisiTax it will be valid for 3 months to travel to any city in the state. For example, if you arrive at the Cancun International Airport and on your return the flight leaves from the Tulum International Airport, the same receipt is valid as long as it is within the 3-month period. You should know that people who have a Mexican passport are not required by law to pay this tax regardless of where their flight comes from.

For Official VisiTax some forms need to be filled in a process to be able to pay and receive your authorized receipt with the folio. Beware with several websites that “seems official” using names to confuse with exagerated prices.

Another option to pay is make the lines at Cancun Airport and Tulum Airport to pay in cash directly at the official modules but consider arriving well in advance since there may be long lines when you have to fill out a VisiTax Mexique form for each person and then make another line to pay, which could be a risk of fatigue, delay, cancellations of contracted services and even loss of flights.

Visitax is a right that is collected by the State of Quintana Roo labeled as "use and explotación of public domain assets", which in terms of article 25 of the Expenditure Budget for fiscal year 2024, must be allocated to the concepts mentioned in article 14 of the Law of Financial Discipline of the States and Municipalities. Effective on December 2022, the Law of Rights of the State of Quintana Roo, article 51-octies has been amended to make VisiTax mandatory for all international visitors without Mexican passport. The only exemption applies to individuals entering the state from the southern border.
