COBA MAYAN RUINS

Mexico / Quintana Roo / Coba

Coba is an archaeological zone of the pre-Columbian Mayan culture with the tallest temple in the Yucatan Peninsula and has the oldest network of stone streets in the Mayan world, housing stone stele with inscriptions of important events. It is believed that the name "Coba" could be from cob, 'what has moisture', or moss and á, or há, 'water', that is to say 'water with moss', or 'water moisture’. The town has grown in recent years but retains much of its vegetation, so you can enjoy in addition to the ruins, activities such as crossing the lake on a zip line, walking around the lake, knowing the 3 incredible cenotes of Cobá that are : Multun-Ha, Choo-Ha and Tankach-Ha formed by crystalline waters and different characteristics that make them worth going to cool off after having explored the archaeological zone and the surroundings. Cobá has some centers where you can stay built by local residents, as well as several restaurants where you can eat delicious food. The structures at Cobá display an evolution in Maya construction techniques. For example, the Nohoch Mul Pyramid features a pronounced incline compared to other Maya pyramids, and its construction incorporates a combination of architectural techniques that evolved over time. The ancient Maya of Cobá were experts in astronomy and used their knowledge to construct structures aligned with important astronomical events. The stelae and monuments at Cobá reflect the Maya's deep understanding of astronomical cycles.
